Hayward, July 15, 2009--Trustee Jacki Fox Ruby was re-elected president of the Alameda County Board of Education at the board's annual re-organization meeting on Tuesday July 14, 2009. Trustee Eileen McDonald was elected vice president.
Fox Ruby, who has been a board member since 2002, represents trustee area 1, which includes Albany, Berkeley, Emeryville, Piedmont, and portions of Oakland that include North Oakland and Chinatown/Central.
"Jacki's vision for healthier communities, for green practices in facility management, and for the physical well-being of our staff, administrators and educators makes her a great leader in our community. I congratulate Jacki on her second term." said Sheila Jordan, Alameda County Schools Superintendent.
Fox Ruby is an educator who taught in Oakland, Richmond and Berkeley from 1965 through 1998, grades 4-6, and 7th-8th grade English, history and compensatory education. She was elected President of the Berkeley Federation of Teachers in 1991, an office she held until 1998, and was Chief Negotiator from 1991-99. Elected a Vice President of the California Federation of Teachers in 1991, she became President of its Early Childhood/Kindergarden-12th grade Council in 1993. She has been a strong voice at the State Board of Education and the State Legislature. Upon her retirement, she received a Legislative commendation for her work as a teacher and union leader.
"I would like to thank my colleagues on the Board for their confidence, support, and re-election as Board President. I appreciate each one for the variety of ideas and opinions represented as we make every effort to make wise decisions to benefit every student in Alameda County. This board makes it easy to be president."
Eileen McDonald, educator and small business owner, was elected to the board in 2004 and represents area 6, which includes Newark and the northern and western portion of Fremont.
Conchita Tucker, trustee representing Area 2, which includes Alameda and portions of Oakland that include West Oakland, East Oakland, Elmhurst, and Millsmont south to Shefield Village, has formally submitted her resignation effective July 14, 2009 to pursue her education at Harvard Business School.
