Art IS Education: Awakening Imagination throughout Alameda County
By Sheila Jordan, Alameda County Superintendent of Schools

Art IS Education – Now more than ever, it is important to reflect on the impact of creativity and innovation in our schools and communities.
In a time of scarce resources, it is critical that every student, teacher and administrator is fully engaged.  As we in education cope with unprecedented cuts to programs, our resolve is tested. But quality and equity in education cannot be left behind.  The conversation we must have is how to stand by our commitment to provide a lasting, impactful education for every child, in every school, every day.

In Alameda County we are awakening the imagination and creativity of students and teachers as part of a well-rounded education where every child has the opportunity to learn in the ways he or she learns best. We have developed models for teachers to engage students through music, dance, painting, poetry, spoken word and all of the languages of the arts.  Our students learn and demonstrate their knowledge in history, environmental education and mathematical ideas through the visual arts, multi-media and performance art.
During such times of severe budget crises, we cannot lose sight of the tremendous value and critical role that learning in and through the arts has in educating our children. Although we face significant challenges in the months and years ahead, I am excited about this time of hope and change. We have an opportunity to share a new model that contributes to new national, state and regional education policies that make good on our promise to our nation’s children.

I invite the public to visit www.artiseducation.org to see how arts in education can improve students’ capacity to learn and grow as healthy individuals; and to make positive contributions to the well being of their peers, families, and communities today and in the future.

Sincerely,
Sheila Jordan
